6-axis robots that were used in the car industry are becoming
more and more affordable. They can be mounted with different
end effectors like a milling-bit, wire-cutter or extruder.
In the past only software like SprutCAM could be used to
do milling operations. In 2012 Grasshopper was introduced
which made it possible to create tool-paths and robot-code
or do inverse kinematics without much effort. Without having
experience in robotics I discovered that I could generate
a parametric design and export robot-code to fabricate it.
Because of its insulating capabilities, EPS is a useful
material in facades. With this project we explored the
possibilities to sculpture EPS into a smart facade. With
a wire-cutter mounted we managed to create a cavity in
the center of this prototype. Wire cutting is a much
more effective way of shaping EPS, but can only cut ruled
surfaces. Combining the two subtractive methods creates a
faster sculpting process.
