Close to the city of Rotterdam, the Bergse Achterplas is a typical Dutch wetland that was deliberately not reclaimed to protect this unique landscape. Many small islands are situated in this lake, shaped by the peat excavation of the 16th century. The pied-à-terre had to be designed with a small footprint of 40 m² and an efficient interior that could also accommodate small groups of guests. The experience of the surrounding landscape from within the house was of great importance. The contours of the house are the result of carefully drawing all sightlines from within and around the house.
